What To Prepare:
Come to auditions with one verse and one chorus prepared of a song of your choice to be sung a cappella. If you can beatbox, show us what you can do! You only have to audition once on whichever audition day is more convenient for you! After each audition day, a callback list will be posted on this page, as well as our Facebook and Instagram pages. If you are called back, come prepared with another verse and chorus selection (different than auditions). We may also test your pitch matching ability and vocal range at auditions and/or callbacks. At callbacks, we will teach you a segment of one of our arrangements based on your voice part to hear how you blend with the group. After callbacks, we will call you to let you know our decision!
FAQ
How do I sign up?
There is no sign up! Just come to one of the audition days and write your name on the audition list at the door. The order of auditions is on a first come first serve basis, so you may want to come early!
How often are auditions?
Faux Paz typically holds auditions at the beginning of the Fall and Spring semesters. Once audition dates are finalized, they are posted on this page as well as Facebook and Instagram.
What should I sing?
We suggest singing a verse and a chorus of a song that you are comfortable with and that shows off your voice! Try to avoid choosing musical theatre or classical songs.
I'm a beatboxer/vocal percussionist. Do I have to sing?
Yes, we would still like to hear you sing a verse and chorus for us. But don't stress! If you primarily beatbox, we will take that into consideration!
Do I have to be a student to audition?
Yes, in order to be considered for Faux Paz you must be enrolled as an undergraduate student at the University of Maryland, College Park.
Can I audition for more than one group?
Yes, the majority of groups hold auditions on the same day. However, you can only join one group after auditions and callbacks.
Is one audition day better than the other?
No! We hold two audition days in order to accommodate students' schedules and to shorten the wait time on each day. Again, you only need to come to one audition day and both days provide equal chances.
When are rehearsals?
We typically rehearse Wednesdays and Sundays from 7-9:30pm; however these days and times are subject to change based on the current members' schedules. We also add additional rehearsal times before bigger performances, such as our semesterly Big Shows or when we compete in the ICCA.
Do I need to be able to read music?
No! However it is definitely helpful to know and our members have helped teach it to new members!
What should I wear to auditions?
We suggest dressing comfortably as auditions and callbacks can involve some wait time. Dressy attire is not necessary.
What should I bring to auditions?
Definitely WATER and a pen! We suggest bringing some type of reusable bottle as there are multiple water fountains in the building. You may also want to bring some snacks, homework to do while you wait, a phone charger, and headphones to help you practice your song.
I'm new to music. Should I still audition?
Absolutely! Many of our members were new to music when they joined and the majority are not music majors. We encourage anyone to audition who loves to sing or beatbox, no matter how experienced.
If I don't get in, can I audition again in the future?
Yes, in fact many current members were accepted to the group after more than one audition. There are many factors that go into our audition decisions and we may need different voice parts or styles at different times. Remember to keep practicing and to not get discouraged!
What if I am not able to attend either audition day?
If neither day works for you, shoot us an email at fauxpazumd@gmail.com and we'll set up a separate day that you can come by and audition for a few of us!
What if I have more questions?
Feel free to contact us here or email us directly at fauxpazumd@gmail.com and we will get back to you as soon as possible!
